In addition to my formal education I have studied art since the age of twelve, working with a private mentor in oil painting. At the age of fourteen, I began lessons in watercolor at the Art Students League in New York City with Mario Cooper, then President of the American Watercolor Society. I spent a summer at Alfred University studying ceramics, and for two years I took classes at Greenwich House Pottery, in Greenwich Village, N. Y. while working as a class assistant.
FINE ARTS EXPERIENCE
I began working as a professional artist, taking commissions, while still in graduate school. This was also the time I became involved in the thoroughbred racing world. I spent four years working at Belmont Park learning about horse anatomy and confirmation. Since then I have exhibited in many venues. I had a painting accepted to the opening exhibition at Colonial Downs in Kent, Virginia that was later sold at a charity auction for the New York Jockey Club. In 2005 I had two paintings selected by the National Art For Parks Foundation as representative of the Shenandoah Valley one of which toured with their exhibit for the year.I have shown with the American Academy of Equine Artists and I am a member of the Virginia Equine Artists Association. Some years ago, while living in Brattleboro, Vermont, I joined with a group of artists and the Vermont Council on the Arts to found the Windham Art Gallery. This is a cooperative gallery, and I worked in all areas from building and painting walls to advertising and bookkeeping. I am currently a member of the Staunton August Art Center in Staunton, Virginia. In 2006 I had a pastel accepted to show with the Pastel Society of America in Gramercy Park, New York. In 2007 I won a commission to create a painting used for the Montpelier Hunt Races poster which was auctioned for the foundation. A limited edition of fine art prints of the painting was offered for sale to benefit the Montpelier Race Foundation. In November of 2007 I exhibited with The American Artist Professional League at the Salmagundi Club in N.Y.C. and received the top honor for watermedia. In 2008 I exhibited with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at Montpelier, the Arts Center in Orange and at the Staunton Augusta Art Center Gallery with “Artists Who Teach”. As adjunct faculty I have exhibited with Bridgewater College and James Madison University in 2009 and 2010.
